Please contact our Accounts Department directly on 9005 7055 and mention you are a Kossard patient. We will discuss payment options with you. If you are not satisfied with these options, please contact our Director of Operations. Our Director is himself one of our Specialist Dermatopathologists. This varies depending on the number and type of samples of your skin which your doctor refers to us, and on our findings when we examine them. The ‘gap expense’ is the difference between what we charge you and what Medicare will reimburse you for our services. For most patients, the gap expense will be approximately $50. More unusual or complex diagnoses may result in a higher gap expense, up to an amount approximately equal to the amount which Medicare will reimburse you for our services after you present our paid invoice to Medicare.
In the mail. The invoice will provide a range of payment options available to you.
Government-determined Medicare Rebates for skin pathology services have steadily declined for decades. Unfortunately, the amount that Medicare reimburses you for our services is no longer by itself enough to fund the high quality of diagnostic skin pathology which you and your doctor deserve.

If you receive a bill from us for your in-hospital pathology testing, and you have no health insurance coverage, then you’ll need to pay 100% of your account.
After you pay your pathology account in full, we will then mail an official receipt to you. Please bring or send both this receipt and the original invoice to Medicare to receive a rebate if applicable and eligible. Please be sure to provide both the official receipt and the original invoice, as either the receipt or the invoice alone is also not sufficient to claim any applicable rebate.
Most private health insurance funds have a no gap agreement with our pathology labs. This means that you won’t receive a bill for any Medicare-approved testing that was conducted while you were in hospital. You simply need to be with one of these no gap health insurers:
However, please note, there are a few private health insurers who don’t offer their members this no gap benefit. They prefer that their members receive a bill direct from our pathology labs instead.
NIB is the largest of these private insurers who don’t offer no gap coverage with our pathology labs (or those of any other pathology provider). So if you do receive a bill from us, you’ll need to pay 100% of your account to us. We will then issue you with an official receipt which you can send to Medicare and your private health insurance company, for a rebate if applicable.
If you have a Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card, you will not incur out-of-pocket expenses for any medical services provided by our laboratory. We will bill your tests direct to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for payment.
If you have received an invoice from us, it will be because we have not been made aware of your status as a Veteran Affairs Gold Cardholder, or your card number. Please contact us to provide these details and we will bill your tests direct to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for payment.
These can include the following:
Some of these tests may be covered by your private health insurance. Please contact your provider for more details.
